Temptation is one of those GIANTS everybody faces. We ALL face temptation in one form or another. But as Christians, we face and handle temptation drastically different than our world. In this message Pastor Kenneth walks us through David’s fall into temptation and shows us how we can overcome temptation in our own lives.

    An Uncommon Forgiveness
The title of the current series is "Counter-Cultural." The premise is that Christians are to live and behave differently from the way world typically operates. This is not always easy. But, by applying a simple and biblical process, we can discover the joy and freedom in life that comes from an uncommon forgiveness.

Living Peacefully in a World of Conflict
No one – Christian or non-Christian – is immune of conflict. Conflict can raise a challenge to any and all relationships. But for Christians, whenever conflict raises a challenge, the peace of Christ is the answer.

Counterculture

Does being a Christian make any difference? It should. Christians should be different . . . Counterculture because of Jesus. The values of Jesus are vastly different than the values of this world and as a result, Christians live differently because of Jesus’ values.

That’s what this series is all about . . . looking at the counter-cultural way that Christians live.

From License to Liberty
Sadly, the longer we are Christians the easier it is to be OK with something God’s not OK with. We get lulled into the grace abuse of license. And the only way to break free is through a liberating experience of true grace that produces more and more gratitude for all Jesus has done for us.

    Jesus + or Jesus Only
What does it mean to be a Christian? How do I become one . . . and how do I stay one? These should be straightforward questions, but for some reason our sin and pride can get us all mixed up. We try to earn what can only be received from Christ. And we try to keep what only can be secured by Christ.

Legalism and License

The Gospel is the good news of what Jesus HAS DONE to solve our problem of
sin and separation from God. There is nothing that WE DO. We only accept it
by grace, through faith and live with joy and gratitude for what we have
received.

But for some reason, we have warped this wonderful news with our own versions of legalism or license. This series addresses those errors head on and points us back to the truth we need.

What If God…Really Meant What He Said
We see things every day that we ignore or don’t take seriously. That even applies to the Word of God. But if God really meant what He said . . . and we lived by it: Jesus would be FIRST with no rival or equal. Jesus would be the CENTER for everything we say, think and do. We would gladly DEPEND on Jesus to be right with God. Life just wouldn’t make sense without Him.

What If God…Really Used Me to Serve Others
Who knows whose future will be changed by your actions TODAY and TOMORROW and the NEXT DAY and the NEXT! There are countless numbers of people – young and old, alive today and yet to be born – whose lives will be greatly affected for all eternity based on the choices you make. That’s why it’s critical that no obstacle would stop us from getting people to Jesus.

What If God…Really Spoke to Me
Many Christians ask if God is speaking, but that’s the wrong question.  He is always speaking.  The real question is if we are listening. That’s the right question and the one that makes clear what we want to do and who we want to be.

What if God … Really Changed Me
Everybody has a false well that they return to over and over again that will never satisfy their real thirst. Our false wells may be different, but our actions are the same. In order to make life worth living, we run to the false well. In order to forget life when it’s hard, we run to the false well. And every time we do that, we walk away from the only true well that can satisfy . . . the living water from Jesus! That living water satisfies our true thirst . . . to be FULLY KNOWN and TRULY LOVED by God!

What If God…Really Used Me to Reach Others
What do you want to be? Who do you want to be? How you answer those questions and the steps that you take as a result will define your life. But not just you. It’s never just you. It will define the lives of your family . . . your friends . . . your church . . . and countless people we have never met yet! In this message, we consider what it would look like if God really used us to reach others.

What If God…

WHAT IF GOD . . . really used me to reach others . . . really rose in my life . . . really changed me . . . really spoke to me . . . really used me to serve others . . . really meant what he said?

I imagine we would be compelled to build lives that go deeper and higher and wider into Christ and live to make much of him. The results would be explosive for us and the ripple effects would go well beyond us.

That’s just what this series is all about!

    Building Something That Lasts
As Jesus gave His life for us, we give our lives for others in our community and world. That is why we worship. That is why we reach out and minister to people. That is why we want everyone to grow in Christ. That is why we want to be faithful to God’s Word even when it’s hard. That is why we want to be a community that serves and loves like Jesus.

VISION: Building Something that Lasts

Jesus made our mission clear: make disciples. He gave us the Great Commandment to inspire the mission: love God and love your neighbor.

In that spirit, here is the heartbeat of our church: As Jesus gave His life for us, we give our lives for others in our community and world.

That means we love God.
It means we love people.
And it means we love now.

We are all running an important spiritual race in our lives whether we are conscious of it or not. And there are three critical truths about the race: (1) Spiritually DEAD people cannot make themselves ALIVE. (2) Spiritual ACTIVITY is not the same as spiritual LIFE. (3) Spiritual life is about what Jesus has DONE, not what we DO.

Go Ahead, Ask Me Anything

We all have questions. In this sermon series, Pastor Jim addresses questions from the congregation. Question topics include

> STAYING FAITHFUL IN HARD TIMES

This one centers on issues related to stress, suffering, spiritual doubts, etc.

> EMOTIONAL REACTIONS TO LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES

This one centers around our reactions and responses to all kinds of situations and relationships.

> HOW DO I REACH…?

This one is about helping you to feel more equipped to share the Gospel or point different people in your life to Jesus.

On the fourth week we will spend time answering questions NOT related to those three subjects.

It’s easy to overemphasize the wonder of Christmas or miss it’s importance completely. Christians do both all the time.

In this series we are going to avoid those pitfalls and see that because of Christmas . . . there is Incarnation, there is Easter, there is the Church, there is Pentecost and there is Eternal Life!

gods at War

There may not be wooden or golden idols in your home but there may be significant idols in your heart. These idols can look like normal, everyday concerns about security, financial stability, desire for attention or affection, but can easily become the ugly reality of anxiety, greed, and seeking approval of man, rather than God.

This sermon series addresses the issue of idolatry in the lives of believers by determining which false gods are striving to sit on the throne of your heart. Whether they are the idols of money, love, success, food or romance, you can discover the freedom that awaits you when you allow the true God to reside unchallenged in your heart and life

The Day of Judgment is coming. In this message, Pastor Jim teaches us that
    1. We MUST have a judgment day
    2. We CAN’T have a judgment day
    3. In JESUS we’ve already had OUR judgment day
    4. In Jesus we can LIVE between TWO judgements

Our culture says that focusing on yourself is natural. It says that fulfillment is found in more and more self-affirmation, self-assertion and self-esteem.

The only problem is that it doesn’t work.

Christianity always goes against the cultural grain. It says that the only way to really find fulfillment is by losing yourself in God and loving others in His name.

That is the best way to DIE and the best way to LIVE.

If there was a huge problem that affected everyone at one level or another we should address it in church. If this problem twisted and distorted a good gift of God and made it harder to live a pure single life or prepare for marriage and even harder to build a strong marriage we would definitely have to address it.

Even if its hard to see and uncomfortable to talk about we have to address it. Lust is a problem just like that. And only Jesus’ power can set us free from its grip.

    The S Word
In this message, Pastor Jim encourages us to seek the ONE while we prepare for our TWO.

The S Word

The S WORD is everywhere! It’s in our fashion, advertising, media, entertainment and much, much more. People wonder about how to do it, when to do it and who to do it with.

We discuss and debate it on talk shows, in classrooms, bedrooms, therapists offices and even in the Supreme Court. Opinions about it shift from generation to generation and across many different demographics.

But what does the Creator have to say about it? If you haven’t guessed it yet, the S WORD is SEX and its time we get crystal clear on what God says about the wonderful gift of sex that He created.

That’s what this series is all about . . .

Gospel-Centered Ministry

Ministry is not just for people who have titles and get paid. It isn’t something we do to be right with God or so God owes us. It isn’t something we do to be thanked by others. All those are wrong ideas and motives. In this message Pastor Jim shared that ministry is any gracious act done in Jesus’ name for the benefit of someone else. And every Christian has been shaped in grace to serve others!

Real, lasting and deep change is not about harnessing our mind for better will-power or focusing our emotions. We need something higher than the mind and deeper than emotions. From This Side of the Cross

As Christians, we have been redeemed and transformed by the cross of Christ. But how SHOULD we live now? What SHOULD mark our lives as Christ-followers? In this series, we explore four truths that will help us grow in our relationship with God and characterize us a Christians.

1. Growing to know God – Gospel
2. Growing personally – Rhythms
3. Growing with friends – Community
4. Growing to serve – Mission

I Am Second

There is a lot of competition in our world for the top spot. Everyone wants to be number one, head of the class, first in line, top priority . . . the list goes on and on.

If we don’t get it we aren’t happy and even resent others that seem to have what we don’t. Yet even if we do get to the top, we find out that it’s only an empty illusion. The answer to our deepest longings and greatest hopes isn’t found in being first. It’s found in being second, in denying ourselves and decreasing so that Jesus can increase.

When we are second and Jesus is first we finally find what our heart was always longing for, our greatest hope and the gift of present peace and eternal joy.

It’s all found in the secret of being second . . .

    Go Ahead, Ask Me Anything
    Question 1
In this message, Pastor Jim answers the following questions:
    1. Do you bring your sermons from memory?
    2. Is the phrase “Oh my God” taking God’s name in vain as in the first commandment?
    3. YWHW, the name of our God, is in the Bible over 6,000 times, but the church never uses the name God tells us to call him. Why?
    4. Please explain the Trinity. Scripture seems to depict 3 distinct people, but we are very clear about there being only one God. How do we merge these two thoughts without making each member of the Trinity a piece of God?
    5. Please discuss salvation and baptism. I believe salvation is through faith alone – a gift from God. Baptism is an outward show of that faith & relationship.
    6. What happens to people who pass away that haven’t heard the Gospel?
    7. Why do we keep doing the same things in very much the same ways, and expect something to really change?
    8. What do you do when you know you have strayed from the path, and want to walk with the Lord again?
    9. Explain God forgiving and forgetting our sins vs. God reviewing with us everything we have said or done.
    10. I know that good works without grace doesn’t work, what about those who claim forgiveness without good works?
    11. (Reworded) Please explain why Parkgate has a Senior Pastor/Leadership Team model of government instead of an elder/deacon model?
    12. (Reworded) Brittany Maynard was a young woman with incurable brain cancer that ended her own life. Assuming she is a Christian, what awaits her? Is she received into heaven? Is suicide just another sin?
    13. Please discuss and explain the “rapture” concept of Christian teachings.
    14. When we die will we stay in Heaven forever or will we someday return to earth with Jesus and live here?

    As a Christian, how Should (Do) I . . .
    Question 1
In this sermon, Pastor Jim answers the following questions about as Christians, how should/do I _______________?

    1. As a Christian, how should I be motivated to open my Bible and read it?
    2. (Reworded) As a Christian, how do I stay faithful to God even when I go through times of depression, hardship and          trial?
    3. (Reworded) As a Christian, how should I handle the issue of tithes and offerings when both my home church and             other ministries are involved? What is the best way to remain obedient to God?
    4. Reworded) As a Christian, how do I address the issue of being disenchanted when people in my church don’t act like       Christ as they should? Should I address it or accept it as part of human nature?
    5. (Reworded) As a Christian, what do you do when you are giving and serving and others (sometimes including people        in leadership positions) do not? We are taught to work together in community and lead by example. Who do we talk to      about this?
    6. (Reworded) As a Christian, what should you do when you see groups and cliques in your church that draws a clear          separation in the congregation?
    7. (Reworded) As a Christian, how should I teach skeptical college kids about Jesus despite the amazing claims of a virgin      birth and the resurrection or the fact that he never traveled over 34 miles from where he was born and never wrote          anything? Is there more than my personal experience that I can use?
    8. (Combined) As a Christian, how should I think about my salvation? Am I eternally secure or can I lose my salvation? If I can lose it, how would that happen? Is       there a point where a Christian can mess us and God will abandon them?
    9. As a Christian, how do I stay faithful to Christ the Lord when I have family stuff going on around me?
    10. As a Christian, how can I make sure to wisely distinguish between the essentials of the faith, the tenets of some Christian groups and my own personal               opinions or fancies?
    11. As Christians in a specific denomination, how should we work with those of other denominations to promote the world church, especially when some other            groups have significant differences in interpretation of the Bible than us?

    Sex and Relationships
    Question 1
In this sermon, Pastor Jim answers the following questions about sex and relationships:

    1.  I am a single person who is divorced. I struggle to maintain my sexual purity and have failed many times. I want to remarry, but I want to live a pure life in the meantime. What steps should I take?

    2.  Why have so many Christian writers and pastors been so vocal about condemning 50 Shades of Gray, when it’s obvious that not one of them have actually read the book?

    3.  What is the Christian response to those who ask how can a God who is love and who loves not approve of homosexual relationship?

    4.  How should I talk to my children about same-sex marriage, especially if they have school friends with two moms or two dads?

    5.  My workplace requires tolerance and acceptance of a variety of lifestyles--unmarried families, homosexual couples, people having surgery for gender switching, etc. How can I be a person of integrity in regards to my faith?

    6.  I knew at a young age that I was gay. I have chosen to live a celibate life as a Christian. People and friends at church do not know that I am gay, which makes them want to find me dates. My question is: Is it a sin that I have not been truthful with them.

In this message Pastor Jim answers the following questions:

    1. I saw an experiment where people reacted with horror and disgust at verses purportedly from the Koran but actually pulled from the Bible. How should Christians respond to the charge that the Bible encourages violence and misogyny (ingrained prejudice against women) in the same way that the Koran does?

    2. I am asked too often why does God allow so much tragedy. How do I answer that question more substantially where the answer will influence relationship with God?

    3. What is the purpose of the current nation of Israel? Is it still the promised land of the Bible, a historical place, or just an ally to be used to stop Muslims? Are there faithful Jews still living there?

    4. With the threat of terrorists posing as refugees, how should we approach the influx of Syrian refugees – open love or skepticism?

Every Christian wants to be a part of a GREAT CHURCH! They want great teaching, great ministries, services to the poor, mission to the community and world. They want their church to make a difference. But there are two approaches to this:

2. I want to be a part of a church where WE do that TOGETHER!

The Church I Want to Be a Part Of
    Series: Reach
    Reach (2000x768)
Every Christian wants to be a part of a GREAT CHURCH! They want great teaching, great ministries, services to the poor, mission to the community and world. They want their church to make a difference. But there are two approaches to this:

    1. I want to be a part of a church where YOU do that!
    2. I want to be a part of a church where WE do that TOGETHER!

In this message, Pastor Jim makes clear that God wants us to worship, grow, serve and reach out TOGETHER! We have received the graciousness and generosity of God in rich measure and naturally live to share it with others as an act of praise back to Him!

    Leaving Fake Behind
    Series: Reach
    Reach (2000x768)
Pastor Jim challenged us to take an honest look at the daily rhythms of our life because too many of us have been faking it for so long that we don’t know any different. But if we left fake behind we could experience a whole new rhythm of life as a gift from God. These rhythms aren’t about more religion, but deep relationship with God where we actually come to know Him. And out of that relationship with God we can enjoy sharing life with one another just as He intended.
