All I Want for Christmas

Who hasn’t wanted to see God show up, to find some good news, encounter a new beginning, or find someone to believe in? Who hasn’t longed for that at a personal level and who hasn’t looked for it in our families, communities, or nations? That is not just a 2020 thing. 3,000 years ago, Isaiah and his people longed for the same things. He prophesied about the coming of God’s Messiah, Jesus. 800 years later Jeus was born in a Bethlehem manger, God’s answer to our deepest longings. 2,000 years later, Jesus is still that answer. That is the promise of Christmas and the hope of Advent.

“Choosing Hope” Q & A time
Theologian Dr. Tim Mackie puts it like this: “What we hope for shapes what we live for.” So if we hope for circumstances to get better, then we only live for circumstances getting better. When we’re disappointed, our hope fades. But when we place our hope in God, we live for God. That’s what motivates us to endure the challenges life brings us. Join us as we dig deeper into Pastor Chelsea’s message (from December 27th) exploring how to choose hope.

As Matthew introduces the greatest story of all time (the birth of Jesus), you would think that he would present only the best parts of Jesus and His family tree. It would be quite natural for Matthew to mention the great and forget about the questionable or outright evil people found in Jesus’ family tree. But he mentions the good, bad, and questionable. Why? Because those Jesus came from, He also came for.

 James: A Faith that Matters

We are traveling together on a journey that has the potential to change our lives. A faith that matters is a faith dedicated to Jesus Christ and then lived out for and in the power of Jesus. A faith that is meaningful, fruitful, and impacts not only our lives but the lives of those around us.

We want to not only highlight the importance of faithfulness to God but how to be faithful. During this series, A Faith that Matters, we’ll dive into eleven important topics as we walk through the book of James together.

The World says that you are going to live forever. So, you should seek greatness by building wealth and power and enriching yourself. The World’s way is all about you and your agenda. It’s about chasing after a greatness that is just a mist. The World’s way won’t last. Jesus says that you are only going to live a short time. So, you should seek greatness by spending your life on things that have eternal significance instead of wasting it on worldly things. Jesus’ way is all about glorifying God and obeying Him. It’s about chasing after a greatness that lasts for eternity.

Things We Don’t Pray For

Every Christian knows that we are commanded by God to pray. Prayer is connecting with the heart of God. He wants our heart and we need His. But if we’re honest, there are things about our prayer life that God commands, but we ignore and neglect. If that changed, how would God change us and how would He change the world around us?

Exodus:

Exodus is a story about injustice that demands deliverance. It’s about a people who need a redeemer to protect and defend them. Not only that, those people are alone and broken and they need to be chosen and cherished. They need the rich inheritance of God’s grace. We can all find ourselves in the Exodus story because we all need a God who draws us out to draw us in.

When we think of our desired reputation as believers, words like “loving,” “welcoming,” “kindhearted,” and “faithful” come to mind. The word “generous” probably does too - but how are we about actually living that out? As we look at the transformation in the heart of the Israelite people as they brought their gifts to the tabernacle, we learn what it looks like to give radically, by giving gratefully, collectively, sacrificially, and obediently.

We are people that need joy, but too often we find ourselves held captive by the ever-changing circumstances of our lives, which are out of our control. We chase the wrong joy from the wrong source when true joy from the right source is closer than we think.
